BUSHMILLS IS THE WORLD'S OLDEST LICENSED WHISKEY DISTILLERY.<\/p>\n

Bushmills is home to the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world. Official records date back to 1608, when the area received its distilling license. More than 400 years later, whiskey is still being produced at Bushmills, thanks to experience and craftsmanship passed down from generation to generation.<\/p>\n

We couldn't make our whiskey anywhere but here. Our water, drawn from the Bush River, flows over basalt rock beds.<\/p>\n

Bushmills is more than just a whiskey. It's a village, where family, friends and neighbors work side by side at the distillery. As we often say, \u201cwithout the village there would be no whiskey, and without the whiskey there would be no village\u201d.<\/p>\n

Bushmills is named for the mills that dotted the town along the Bush River.<\/p>\n

In the 1850s, the Crown imposed a tax on those who distilled in Ireland through a tax on barley. Even so, malted barley was known throughout the world for producing the finest whiskey, known as \u201cstraight malt\u201d whiskey. When only malted barley is used in distillation and made in a single distillery, you have the very definition of \u201csingle malt\u201d whiskey. This tax, however, changed Irish whiskey forever, as almost all Irish whiskey distilleries began substituting barley for corn or other inferior grains.<\/p>\n
