The Maria Teresa Vineyard, named after the first granddaughter of Constantino de Almeida (founder of Quinta do Crasto), is a century-old vineyard and one of the oldest on the farm. Located on the eastern slope of Quinta do Crasto, with excellent sun exposure and planted on terraces next to the Douro River, at extremely low elevations, Vinha Maria Teresa occupies an area of 4.7 hectares, impressing with its beauty and, above all, its unique characteristics of old vines.<\/p>\n
More than 100 years ago, wine producers planted a little bit of everything in the Douro from the varieties they had available, since the ultimate objective was to produce Port Wine and this generous wine had the special characteristic of being the result of several mixed grapes of different varieties. The end result was a vineyard where the planting of grape varieties had been random and diverse, and in which it was possible to find a large number of different varieties.<\/p>\n
In 2013, given the advanced age of the Maria Teresa Vineyard, Quinta do Crasto began the genetic mapping of each grape variety that is planted here, with the aim of replacing dead vines with genetically identical varieties, thus perpetuating the \u00abterroir\u00bb and the \u00abfield blend\u00bb of this unique vineyard. The PatGen Vineyards project, as it is called, and developed in partnership with the University of Tr\u00e1s-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), aims to identify all the grape varieties that are part of the Maria Teresa Vine, and, to date, 54 different varieties have already been identified, including four white grape varieties and one \u201cunknown\u201d red grape variety, that is, a variety with which it has not yet been possible to find any equivalence.<\/p>\n
A 100-year-old plant in an old vineyard like the Maria Teresa Vineyard has a significantly low production capacity and will never be able to produce the same amount of grapes as a tree from a new vine. The roots of the Vineyard Maria Teresa vines can reach tens of meters deep, penetrating the schist soil in search of water and nutrients, which increases the competitiveness between each plant and helps to improve the productive performance of each plant. Even so, annually, the average production per tree at Vinha Maria Teresa is around 300 g of grapes.<\/p>\n
Despite its low productivity, the Quinta do Crasto Enology team achieves extremely high levels of concentration with the grapes from this vineyard, which allows for world-class wines to be obtained, very complex and full of character, guaranteeing evolution in the bottle for many years.<\/p>\n
The quantity of grapes harvested annually from the Maria Teresa Vine is used to produce Douro Quinta do Crasto Reserva Vinhas Velhas wine. In years of exceptional quality, the annual production of grapes from Vinha Maria Teresa is destined to the production of a \u201cmonovinha\u201d wine that honors its name: the Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa Douro wine. In these special years, Vinha Maria Teresa produces between 2,000 and 8,000 bottles of Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa, depending on the exceptionality of each year. The maximum number of bottles of Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa Douro wine produced by Quinta do Crasto from Vinha Maria Teresa was, in 2007, 8,001 bottles.<\/p>\n

Depois de 2017 e 2018, com produ\u00e7\u00f5es significativamente abaixo da m\u00e9dia da \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, o ano de 2019 mostrou-se mais generoso em quantidade e mais na linha da m\u00e9dia produtiva a que estamos habituados na Quinta do Crasto. No entanto, n\u00e3o deixou de ser um ano considerado desafiante, ap\u00f3s um inverno e primavera secos, que levaram a baixos n\u00edveis de reservas de \u00e1gua no solo para as necessidades das videiras. Verific\u00e1mos, no entanto, que nos meses de junho, julho e agosto, as videiras se mostravam com \u00e1reas foliares equilibradas e de apar\u00eancia saud\u00e1vel, n\u00e3o indicando elevados sintomas de stress h\u00eddrico. Atribu\u00edmos este equil\u00edbrio \u00e0s temperaturas amenas (menos 5\u00baC que a m\u00e9dia dos \u00faltimos 5 anos na Quinta do Crasto) que se fizeram sentir desde maio at\u00e9 final de agosto. Este fator contribuiu positivamente para que o per\u00edodo de matura\u00e7\u00e3o das uvas durante os meses de julho e agosto decorresse de forma lenta e muito equilibrada. Como resultado, alcan\u00e7\u00e1mos n\u00edveis excepcionais de matura\u00e7\u00e3o da uva. A Vindima de 2019 decorreu com muita tranquilidade, onde as noites frias e os dias quentes e secos, permitiram que as uvas fossem vindimadas no momento certo. Essencial foi tamb\u00e9m a chuva ocorrida nos dias 21 e 22 de setembro, que veio ainda ajudar a refinar a matura\u00e7\u00e3o de algumas castas mais tardias, nomeadamente a touriga franca. Na colheita de 2019 recebemos as primeiras uvas brancas da Quinta do Crasto no dia 26 de agosto e terminamos a colheita no dia 11 de outubro com as \u00faltimas uvas das vinhas de maior altitude. Como balan\u00e7o final, temos em 2019 vinhos brancos muito expressivos, com excelente concentra\u00e7\u00e3o, mostrando extraordin\u00e1ria frescura. Os vinhos tintos s\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m reflexo do equil\u00edbrio ocorrido durante o ciclo vegetativo, apresentando-se como vinhos muitos completos, onde podemos encontrar aromas vibrantes, excelente concentra\u00e7\u00e3o, estrutura s\u00f3lida e acima de tudo grande equil\u00edbrio, indicando um excelente potencial de evolu\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

Vinifica\u00e7\u00e3o: As uvas provenientes da vinha Maria Teresa foram transportadas em caixas de 22 kg de capacidade e sujeitas a uma rigorosa triagem em mesa de escolha \u00e0 entrada da adega. Ap\u00f3s um desengace total e pisa em lagar tradicional, o mosto foi transferido para cubas de fermenta\u00e7\u00e3o em a\u00e7o inox com temperatura controlada. No final da fermenta\u00e7\u00e3o alco\u00f3lica, procedeu-se a uma prensagem suave. Envelhecimento Quinta do Crasto Vinha Maria Teresa 2019 estagiou em barricas de carvalho 100% novas, sendo 90% de carvalho franc\u00eas e 10 % de carvalho americano, onde permaneceu cerca de 20 meses. O lote final resulta da melhor selec\u00e7\u00e3o de barricas.<\/p>\n
Nota de Prova: De cor ruby carregado, impressiona no nariz pela sua extraordin\u00e1ria complexidade e frescura arom\u00e1tica, onde se destacam elegantes notas de esteva, frutos silvestres do Douro e especiaria. Na prova de boca inicia de forma compacta, evoluindo para um vinho muito sedutor, onde \u00e9 poss\u00edvel encontrar taninos de textura suave em perfeita harmonia com notas retronasais que lembram frescos aromas de bosque do Douro. Um vinho singular que mostra toda a identidade da centen\u00e1ria Vinha Maria Teresa.
